Physical Chemistry Professional Certification

The physics of chemistry — thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, and quantum chemistry, made quantitative

Key facts

About the Physical Chemistry Professional certification

A professional-level certification in physical chemistry — the branch that explains why and how fast chemistry happens by applying the laws of physics to molecular systems. You will master chemical thermodynamics from first principles: the zeroth, first, second, and third laws; internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, and the Gibbs and Helmholtz free energies; spontaneity and the criteria for equilibrium; chemical potential and the Maxwell relations. You will work through thermochemistry and Hess's law; phase equilibria, phase diagrams, and the Clausius-Clapeyron equation; solutions and colligative properties (Raoult's law, boiling-point elevation, freezing-point depression, osmotic pressure, and activity); and the thermodynamics of chemical equilibrium, including the link between dG and the equilibrium constant K and its temperature dependence through the van't Hoff equation. A full treatment of chemical kinetics follows — rate laws, integrated rate laws and half-lives, the Arrhenius equation and activation energy, collision and transition-state theory, multi-step reaction mechanisms, catalysis, and Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetics. You will study electrochemistry through the Nernst equation, cell thermodynamics, and conductivity; the foundations of quantum chemistry (the Schrodinger equation, the particle in a box, the hydrogen atom, and molecular-orbital theory); spectroscopy (rotational, vibrational, and electronic) with the Beer-Lambert law; statistical thermodynamics through partition functions and the Boltzmann distribution; and an introduction to surface chemistry and adsorption isotherms. Every major idea is reinforced with worked calculations so the quantitative machinery — not just the vocabulary — becomes second nature. This credential certifies that you can reason about energy, equilibrium, rate, and molecular structure the way a working physical chemist does.
