Chemistry Foundations Certification

Think like a chemist — atoms, reactions, and the quantitative reasoning that ties them together

Key facts

About the Chemistry Foundations certification

A foundation-level certification that builds a complete, working mental model of general chemistry from the ground up. You will learn what matter is and how its states and properties are classified (physical versus chemical, intensive versus extensive); how to distinguish elements, compounds, and mixtures; the structure of the atom (protons, neutrons, electrons), atomic number and mass number, and isotopes; how the periodic table is organised into groups and periods and the trends that run across it (atomic radius, ionization energy, electronegativity); electron configuration and valence electrons; the major types of chemical bonding (ionic, covalent, metallic), bond polarity, and the basics of Lewis structures; how to read and write chemical formulas and name simple compounds; the mole concept, molar mass, and Avogadro's number; how to balance chemical equations and classify reactions (synthesis, decomposition, single and double replacement, combustion); the essentials of stoichiometry including mole ratios, limiting reagents, and percent yield; the behaviour of gases through Boyle's, Charles's, and the ideal gas law; solutions and concentration (molarity and dilution); acids, bases, the pH scale, and neutralization; the basics of thermochemistry (exothermic versus endothermic change); and the measurement and safety practices that underpin good laboratory work. Every concept is reinforced with worked calculations so the quantitative reasoning becomes second nature. It is the natural first step before associate-level general and physical chemistry.

What you will learn
