Organic Chemistry Professional Certification

Structure, mechanism and synthesis — from hybridization and stereochemistry to substitution, elimination, aromatic and carbonyl chemistry, spectroscopy and retrosynthesis

Key facts

About the Organic Chemistry Professional certification

A professional-level certification in the chemistry of carbon — the discipline behind every drug, polymer, fuel and biomolecule. You begin with structure and bonding: hybridization (sp3, sp2, sp) and the geometry it dictates, sigma and pi bonds, resonance and delocalization, formal charge, and how to read condensed and line structures. You master IUPAC nomenclature across the major functional groups — alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatics, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives (esters, amides, acid chlorides, anhydrides), amines and more. A full treatment of isomerism follows: constitutional isomers, and the whole of stereochemistry — chirality and stereocenters, the R/S (Cahn-Ingold-Prelog) and E/Z systems, enantiomers and diastereomers, meso compounds, optical activity, and Fischer and Newman projections with conformational analysis of ethane, butane and cyclohexane (chair flips, axial/equatorial). You then learn to think like a mechanist: acidity and basicity of organic molecules (pKa, the five factors — atom, resonance, induction, orbital, solvent), curved-arrow notation and electron flow, and the reactive intermediates (carbocations, carbanions, radicals). The core reaction families are covered in depth — nucleophilic substitution (SN1 vs SN2: kinetics, stereochemistry, nucleophile and leaving-group effects, solvent), elimination (E1 vs E2, Zaitsev vs Hofmann), electrophilic addition to alkenes and alkynes (Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov, stereochemistry), aromatic chemistry (Hueckel's rule and aromaticity, electrophilic aromatic substitution and directing/activating effects), and carbonyl chemistry (nucleophilic acyl substitution, nucleophilic addition, enols and enolates, aldol and condensation reactions). Shorter but rigorous tours cover oxidation and reduction, organometallics (the Grignard reagent), radical reactions (halogenation, initiation/propagation/termination), and structure determination by spectroscopy — infrared (IR) functional-group bands, proton and carbon-13 NMR (chemical shift, integration, multiplicity, the n+1 rule), and mass spectrometry. The course closes with an introduction to synthesis strategy and retrosynthesis, and a survey of polymers and biomolecules. Every structure, mechanism and spectrum is written in clean plain text so you leave able to predict products, push arrows and deduce structures — not just memorize them. It is the cornerstone of medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, materials science and chemical engineering.
