About the Biochemistry Professional certification
A professional-level certification that builds a complete, quantitative command of biochemistry: the chemistry of living systems from first principles to integrated metabolism. You will master the role of water as the solvent of life — its polarity, hydrogen bonding, the hydrophobic effect, ionization, pH, and the buffers that keep cells alive (with the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation worked end to end). You will learn the structure and chemistry of the twenty amino acids (classification, side-chain properties, pKa values, and the titration behaviour that follows), the geometry and rigidity of the peptide bond, and how primary sequence drives secondary (the alpha helix and beta sheet), tertiary, and quaternary structure through folding, motifs, domains, and the forces that stabilise or denature a protein. You will study protein function in depth through the oxygen-binding proteins myoglobin and hemoglobin — cooperativity, allostery, the sigmoidal binding curve, and the Bohr effect. Enzymes are treated rigorously: catalytic strategies and mechanisms, cofactors and coenzymes, Michaelis-Menten kinetics (deriving and interpreting Km and Vmax), the Lineweaver-Burk linearisation, and the three classes of reversible inhibition (competitive, non-competitive, uncompetitive) with their distinct kinetic signatures, plus allosteric and covalent regulation. You will cover the structure and roles of carbohydrates (monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides, glycosidic bonds), lipids and biological membranes (the fluid mosaic model and membrane transport), and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA structure and the central dogma — replication, transcription, and translation). On the energetic side you will connect thermodynamics, ATP and coupled reactions, and the redox electron carriers NAD+ and FAD to the full sweep of metabolism: glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation with the electron transport chain and chemiosmosis, gluconeogenesis, glycogen synthesis and breakdown, fatty acid oxidation and synthesis, the urea cycle, and amino acid metabolism — then their hormonal regulation and integration across the fed and fasted states. The path closes with signal transduction basics, vitamins and the coenzymes derived from them, and an introduction to the laboratory toolkit of molecular biology (PCR, gel electrophoresis, and blotting). Every concept is reinforced with worked calculations and pathway accounting so the reasoning becomes second nature. It is built for students of medicine, pharmacy, the life sciences, and laboratory work who need biochemistry they can actually use.
