Advanced Organic Synthesis & Mechanisms Certification

Graduate-level organic chemistry — physical organic reasoning, stereocontrol, C–C bond construction, pericyclic and transition-metal chemistry, and synthesis strategy

Key facts

About the Advanced Organic Synthesis & Mechanisms certification

An expert-level certification for chemists who already know undergraduate organic chemistry and want to think like a graduate synthetic chemist. You will start from physical organic foundations: frontier molecular orbital (HOMO/LUMO) theory, reaction-coordinate diagrams, the Hammond postulate, the Curtin–Hammett principle, kinetic versus thermodynamic control, Hammett linear free-energy relationships (sigma and rho), kinetic isotope effects, and conformational analysis with A-values and allylic strain. You will then master stereochemistry and stereoselective synthesis: advanced CIP cases and topicity (Re/Si faces), enantiomeric excess and diastereomeric ratio calculations, Felkin–Anh and chelation models, Zimmerman–Traxler aldol transition states, Evans oxazolidinone auxiliaries, Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation and dihydroxylation, and enamine/iminium organocatalysis. Carbon–carbon bond formation follows: kinetic and thermodynamic enolates, alkylation, Michael additions and the Robinson annulation, Wittig, Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons, Still–Gennari and Julia olefinations, and the selectivity of Grignard, organolithium and cuprate reagents. Pericyclic chemistry is treated rigorously through FMO and Woodward–Hoffmann analysis of Diels–Alder reactions (endo rule, regiochemistry), electrocyclic ring closures (conrotatory and disrotatory), sigmatropic [3,3] and [2,3] rearrangements and dipolar cycloadditions. Transition-metal catalysis covers full catalytic cycles for Suzuki, Heck, Sonogashira, Negishi, Stille and Buchwald–Hartwig couplings, olefin metathesis and an overview of C–H activation, with practical guidance on choosing catalysts, ligands, bases and solvents. The final module is strategy: retrosynthetic analysis with disconnections, synthons, functional-group interconversion and umpolung; protecting groups and orthogonality; chemoselective oxidation and reduction (Swern, Dess–Martin, NaBH4, LiAlH4, DIBAL-H, Luche); green-chemistry metrics (atom economy, E-factor, PMI); and case studies on ibuprofen, sitagliptin and tropinone. Every lesson includes a fully worked example and an animated, scientifically exact figure. This credential certifies that you can predict, explain and design complex organic syntheses at a professional research level.
