About the Classical Mechanics Professional certification
The Classical Mechanics Professional certification validates genuine working command of mechanics — not formula recall, but the ability to set up and solve problems the way physicists and engineers actually do, from a free-body diagram to a Lagrangian. You will master vectors and kinematics in two and three dimensions (projectile motion, relative motion, circular motion); Newtonian dynamics (the three laws, friction, drag, tension and normal forces, constraints, inclined planes and pulley systems); and the work-energy theorem, conservative forces, potential energy and the conservation of mechanical energy. On the conservation side you will command linear momentum and impulse, systems of particles, the center of mass, and elastic and inelastic collisions in one and two dimensions. You will then move into rotational mechanics — angular kinematics, torque, moment of inertia, the parallel-axis theorem, angular momentum and its conservation, and rolling without slipping — together with the conditions for static equilibrium. The exam reaches into gravitation (Newton's law of gravity, orbital motion, Kepler's three laws, gravitational potential energy and escape velocity); simple harmonic motion (mass-spring systems, the simple and physical pendulum, energy in SHM, and damped, driven and resonant oscillations); an introduction to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics (generalized coordinates, the Lagrangian L = T - V, the Euler-Lagrange equation and the Hamiltonian); non-inertial frames and fictitious forces (centrifugal, Coriolis); and central forces. Every topic is assessed with worked, step-by-step numerical problems. Candidates should already hold a Physics Foundations credential or equivalent fluency, and be comfortable with basic calculus.
