About the Networking Foundations certification
The Networking Foundations certification builds the rock-solid mental model that every networking, cloud, security and systems career depends on. It is vendor-neutral and starts from first principles: how the OSI and TCP/IP models layer the job of moving data, how encapsulation wraps a message into segments, packets and frames, and what each PDU carries. You will master IPv4 addressing and subnetting — CIDR notation, subnet masks, network/broadcast/host ranges and the math to carve a network into subnets — plus the essentials of IPv6. The exam covers MAC addresses and ARP, the real differences between hubs, switches and routers, Ethernet and LAN basics, an introduction to VLANs, and the core application protocols (HTTP/S, DNS, DHCP, FTP, SSH, SMTP) with their well-known ports and sockets. You will reason about TCP vs UDP and the three-way handshake, NAT and private addressing, default gateways and basic routing, network topologies, cabling and media (copper, fiber and wireless), and the performance vocabulary of bandwidth, latency and throughput. The certification closes with practical troubleshooting (ping and traceroute) and security fundamentals (firewalls and VPNs). It is the natural first step before the Routing & Switching Associate.
