About the Network Architect Expert certification
The Network Architect Expert certification is the capstone credential of the Hootix networking ladder. It is an exam-only, proctored-style assessment: there is no bundled course — you are expected to arrive with deep, hands-on design and operations experience and to demonstrate architectural judgment, not recall. The exam is scenario-heavy and trade-off driven. Almost every question places you in front of a real constraint — a convergence target, an oversubscription budget, a multi-tenancy requirement, a compliance mandate, a capacity ceiling, an SLO — and asks you to choose the best architecture among several plausible options, then understand why the tempting alternatives are inferior. Domains assessed at expert depth: large-scale enterprise and service-provider architecture; advanced routing (BGP at scale — communities, route reflection, confederations, policy, dampening; MPLS L3VPN; segment routing SR-MPLS and SRv6; traffic engineering); data-center fabric design (spine-leaf Clos, VXLAN/EVPN, multi-site and DCI); WAN and SD-WAN architecture; advanced QoS and multicast; high availability, fast convergence and fast reroute (BFD, LFA/TI-LFA, NSF/GR, ISSU); security architecture (zero trust, micro/macro-segmentation, firewall/NAC/DDoS); automation, IaC, telemetry and assurance strategy; cloud and hybrid networking (transit, peering, private connectivity); IPv6 at scale; scalability, capacity and oversubscription modeling; observability and SRE for networks (SLI/SLO/error budgets); migration and modernization; multi-vendor interoperability; and explicit trade-off scenarios. The credential is vendor-neutral: principles transfer across Cisco, Juniper, Arista, Nokia and Cumulus/SONiC. Candidates must already hold both the Enterprise Network Design and Network Automation & SDN credentials; this expert exam builds directly on them. Validity is 24 months.
