Software Architecture Expert Certification

Prove expert-level software architecture judgment under real constraints

Key facts

About the Software Architecture Expert certification

The Software Architecture Expert certification is the capstone credential of the Hootix software-engineering ladder. It is an exam-only, proctored-style assessment: there is no bundled course — you are expected to arrive with deep, hands-on experience designing and evolving production systems, and to demonstrate judgment, not recall. The exam is scenario-heavy and trade-off driven. Almost every question puts you in front of a real constraint — a consistency requirement, a latency budget, a team-topology reality, a compliance mandate, a cost ceiling, an availability target — and asks you to choose the best architecture among several plausible options, then understand why the tempting alternatives are inferior. There is rarely a single 'always correct' answer in architecture; the skill being tested is selecting the right pattern for the stated forces and naming the trade-off you are accepting. Domains assessed at expert depth: architecture styles (layered, hexagonal/ports-and-adapters, microservices, event-driven, serverless, modular monolith, CQRS, event sourcing); domain-driven design (bounded contexts, aggregates, ubiquitous language, context mapping); distributed systems (CAP/PACELC, consistency models, consensus, idempotency, sagas, the outbox pattern, two-phase commit trade-offs); scalability and performance (load balancing, sharding, caching strategies, back-pressure, async); reliability and resilience (redundancy, failover, circuit breakers, bulkheads, graceful degradation, chaos engineering); API and integration architecture (REST/GraphQL/gRPC/events, API gateways, BFF, contract testing); data architecture (polyglot persistence, data ownership, eventual consistency, read models); security architecture (authentication/authorization, zero trust, secrets, STRIDE threat modeling, supply-chain security); observability and operability (SLI/SLO/error budgets, distributed tracing); quality attributes and trade-off analysis (ATAM, fitness functions); architecture decision records; evolutionary architecture and technical debt; team topologies and Conway's law; cost and build-vs-buy; and migration and modernization (the strangler fig pattern). The credential is technology-agnostic: the principles transfer across stacks and clouds. Candidates are expected to already hold the Backend & API Development Professional and DevOps & CI/CD credentials, and to bring the architectural maturity those imply. Validity is 24 months.
